The project aimed at gender equality and inclusion of vulnerable people. The project supported a relatively high number of women. Depending on the crop and the district, the participation of men and women are determined by the production system and the specific stage of the production cycle. The project benefited 39% women and 61% men. The comparatively high number of female beneficiaries is very positive because most women of the project region are excluded from economic activities with financial returns.
Since 2019, the project has supported local multipliers such as specialised staff from private seed and input companies, public sector extension programmes, and teachers and students from educational institutions. These actors are targeted for their capacity to scale up technical assistance, knowledge, and services, increasing outreach and sustainability of the interventions. The project trained 1,462 persons (1,102 men and 360 women).
The project surpassed its targets for productivity and profitability. Horti-Sempre increased average crop yield per SHF and year by 40% (target 30%) and an increase of average net income by 32% (target 30%). The horticultural crops in Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces, which the project targeted, were onions, garlic, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, and pepper. The analysis of the average increase in net yield per crop was done by comparing the producers who benefited from the project with a control group who did not have access to benefits. In December 2021, the average increase in crop net yield was 40% compared to the 30% target. The productivity depends mainly on the specific crop and season. For certain crops, an increase of 30% is comfortably achieved. For others like cabbage and garlic not.
