Dairy farming in Morocco is facing a few challenges. The quality and quantity of milk per cow is limited, production fluctuates with the seasons, and because it is not a profitable business, many young people in villages do not continue the business of their forebears. Nestlé is working together with dairy businesses and applying its “joint value addition” strategy. To this end, Nestlé is implementing the so-called model village concept. This promotes a better work environment while improving milk quality. In order to find more appropriate solutions for stakeholders, the model requires closer involvement of cooperatives and their farmer members.

The project

The project supports existing structures of the model village established by Nestlé. It works together with cooperatives and farmers to better understand and cover their needs. The first step involves depicting the dairy milk value chain in a map, in order to identify the various actors and their roles, in addition to understanding their interrelations. Based on this information, a more sustainable and inclusive business model can be developed.

Thus, dairy businesses can improve their production and minimise their costs. In field schools where the project is coordinated, dairy businesses learn more about best practices in hygiene, feed, and animal husbandry. On top of this, the project makes sure to include young men and women as active participants in the model village. It does so by providing training that helps them to implement their business ideas into action.

Swisscontact collaborates with local partners to ensure that many dairy farmers, young men and women are given high-quality training.

Project objectives

  1. Strengthening dairy farming capacities at the farmer level
    The farmers participate in field schools to learn new animal husbandry practices that improve the balance between costs and revenues. In this way, they can increase their milk production and mitigate the risk of animal diseases. Swisscontact works together with local partners who provide the required knowhow for implementing these field school trainings.
  2. Improving leadership, management, and communication for cooperatives
    Together with dairy cooperatives, Swisscontact is developing a programme to upgrade their administrative and financial management skills, thereby improving their finances. In this way, the cooperatives are better able to meet the needs of their members as well as to represent them externally.
  3. Development of agribusiness skills for young men and women
    Through a series of workshops, Swisscontact is helping young men and women to develop business projects.

Results:

  • Introduction of a new business model involves all actors in the dairy milk value chain. Farmers, cooperatives, and Nestlé all give a positive summary of the model village.
  • Over the long term, the farmers will be able to improve their cost-benefit ratio. Their expenses will decrease, while milk production will increase.
  • Cooperatives will be able to stabilise their internal and administrative structures so that they can better serve their members and offer them improved services with additional financing opportunities.
  • Fewer young people will give up dairy farming for other activities because they will have gained the opportunity to start their own agribusiness. Women will develop their skills, thereby becoming more independent.
