As winter sets in, the distribution of warm bedding items has become a critical intervention for areas with trends of prolonged harsh winters in the north and northwestern regions. The SMILE project, funded by Chevron Bangladesh and implemented by Swisscontact Bangladesh, has undertaken a vital initiative to support disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in Sylhet, Sreemangal, and Nabiganj. In response to the challenges posed by the harsh winter, the project distributed blankets and comforters to provide warmth and protection to disadvantaged communities of Aushkandi, 4 no. Dighalbak and Inathganj Union of Nabiganj District, Lackatoorah Tea Estate of Sylhet Sadar and Mazdehee Tea Garden of Moulvibazar District.
This timely and crucial initiative aims to ensure the well-being of underserved communities by safeguarding them from the severe cold weather that disproportionately affects the most vulnerable. Through this winter assistance program, the SMILE project not only provides relief from extreme weather conditions but also promotes health, well-being, and resilience among underserved communities.
The distribution effort has been carefully planned to reach those who need it most, including low-income families, elderly individuals, and children. This support ensures that families can stay safe and healthy during the colder months, reducing the risk of cold-related illnesses and offering a sense of security. The initiative also strengthens community bonds by showcasing the importance of collective action in overcoming seasonal adversities. The local leaders and tea estate managers have also expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the initiative.
The SMILE project’s intervention highlights its ongoing dedication to creating a positive and lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable populations. By addressing the immediate needs of the pipeline communities, who are the targeted beneficiaries, the project is paving the way for a better future for the communities it serves.
