In honor of #InternationalYouthDay, Swisscontact conducted a community service activity as part of our commitment to giving back. This initiative was carried out by apprentices from the PropelA dual apprenticeship program, designed to tackle Kenya’s high youth unemployment by equipping young people aged 18-24 with essential skills in the electrical and plumbing trades.
The PropelA program bridges the gap between education and industry by offering one week of vocational training at Don Bosco Boys Town - Karen, followed by three weeks of hands-on experience with leading companies in Nairobi County. PropelA empowers youth to meet the evolving needs of Kenya’s private sector.
A key aspect of PropelA’s success is its holistic approach to youth development. While technical skills are crucial, the program also emphasizes community engagement and social responsibility.
In line with this mission and to celebrate #InternationalYouthDay, we organized a community cleanup in the Karen area, where our partner, Don Bosco is based. Our apprentices took part in collecting garbage and tidying up the local market area. Through such experiences, PropelA aims to foster a sense of civic duty and empower young people to actively contribute to their communities.
Beyond technical expertise, we nurture responsible citizens passionate about creating a better world. Our goal is to empower every young person to reach their full potential and become a force for good in their community.
PropelA is financed by the Hilti Foundation. It is part of the Swisscontact Development Programme, which is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
