Systems Strengthening: Empowering HRs and Mentors on Talent Acquisition and People Development

03.10.2024
This training comes at a pivotal moment as we are preparing to place PropelA Cohort 3 apprentices in various companies where they will conduct their on-the-job training for the next 2 years. We expect that through this training, HRs and mentors will be equipped with tools to develop a future skilled workforce.

Recognising an organization’s culture around hiring and personnel development influences the private sector’s commitment to participating in dual apprenticeship, we organized a full-day training session for HRs and mentors who play a key role in guiding PropelA apprentices during their on-the-job training. The training was specifically tailored to equip them with the tools for effective apprentice development and provided valuable insights into successful in-company dual apprenticeship training. This included learning how to effectively attract, develop, and retain top talent for organizational success.

Breakout sessions encouraged participants to collaboratively address challenges in recruitment and share experiences particularly within the PropelA programme and identify practical solutions. These included conducting comprehensive onboarding, enhancing mentorship opportunities, and fostering an inclusive environment where employees feel a strong sense of belonging and contribute efficiently.

"Today’s session taught me the importance of aligning company expectations with employee expectations for maximum productivity and skill utilization. The training is timely, especially with the ongoing recruitment for PropelA Cohort 3. We will apply the strategies shared today, which we missed in previous recruitments, to prevent drop-offs among apprentices,"
Daniel Chege. Mentor, East African Cables.

The training also covered emerging trends in recruitment, such as automation, flexible work arrangements, early career hiring, and skill-driven recruitment. A key focus was placed on integrating Gen Z into talent acquisition processes, as they represent PropelA's target demographic. While acknowledging the generational gap, attendees emphasized the importance of mentorship and open communication in helping them feel included in the workplace.

"To attract the younger generation, we need to modernize our recruitment strategies. Meeting them where they are—on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X—is crucial. This session highlighted the shift from traditional methods to more contemporary approaches."

This training comes at a pivotal moment as we are preparing to place PropelA Cohort 3 apprentices in various companies where they will conduct their on-the-job training for the next 2 years, where they will contribute to organizational success while acquiring in-demand skills.

We expect that through this training, HRs and mentors will be equipped with tools to develop a future skilled workforce. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners for their invaluable contributions in making this initiative a success.
