Amidst Niger’s economic and political challenges, the GWANI project emerges as a game-changer for Nigerien youth, reshaping their futures through innovative and practical training programs. By aligning with local realities and fostering deeper municipal engagement, the initiative unlocks new pathways for thousands of young people striving for professional success and economic independence.

In Niamey, 176 young people—including 88 women—are currently mastering new information and communication technologies (ICT). This specialized training, followed by a three-month internship in a local business, equips them with high-demand skills in web development, graphic design, and digital marketing. Through strategic partnerships with industry leaders, these young professionals are stepping into a fast-growing job market, armed with expertise that positions them for long-term success.

In Illéla, within the Tahoua region, 25 young entrepreneurs have been trained in peanut processing, a high-potential sector in the local economy. By blending traditional knowledge with modern techniques, they are not only creating value-added products but also receiving the tools and mentorship needed to establish their own businesses. Beyond training, the program provides essential equipment and post-training support, ensuring the sustainability of these emerging enterprises. Some beneficiaries have even partnered with local cooperatives, further strengthening the region’s agri-food sector and driving economic resilience.

Redefining gender norms: positive masculinity for equality

Real empowerment for women requires a shift. With this in mind, GWANI has launched an innovative Positive Masculinity Initiative in four municipalities across the Maradi region. Developed in collaboration with a gender specialist, this groundbreaking project challenges deep-rooted stereotypes, encouraging men to take an active role in advancing gender equality.

Through workshops and intergenerational dialogues, the initiative highlights the economic and social benefits of increased female participation in the workforce. By engaging families and local leaders, the program fosters a more inclusive environment, paving the way for equal opportunities and the holistic development of young women and men alike.

Building a lasting impact through strong partnerships

GWANI’s mission extends beyond training—it is structuring an ecosystem that ensures sustainable career pathways for youth. By collaborating with local businesses, community organizations, and public institutions, the program not only facilitates direct job placements but also supports entrepreneurial ventures in high-potential industries such as construction, agri-food, and ICT.

The active involvement of both private and public sector stakeholders is key to amplifying the project’s success and scaling its impact nationwide. By ensuring that training programs align with market demands, GWANI enhances youth employability, strengthens entrepreneurship, and drives long-term economic growth.
