The project supports local economic development through training, social and professional integration, and creating economic opportunities for young adults in the central regions of Mali (Mopti and Ségou), allowing them to quickly access finance for their most urgent economic needs, as well as reducing unemployment.
The 2012 socio-political crisis in Mali caused massive population displacement and exacerbated the precarious socio-economic situation in the country’s northern and central regions. Despite the progress observed since the signing of the 2015 Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, the country’s socio-economic situation remains unstable, while the fragile security situation in the north has spread to the centre of the country (Mopti and Ségou regions). Cross-community conflicts continue to intensify, especially in the region of Mopti, where we are seeing the population suffer injustice, with destruction of villages, targeted assassinations, abductions, and massive population displacement to the country’s south.
Through the Strategic Framework for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development (CREDD) implemented from 2016-2018, the government aimed to support inclusive development in order to make significant reductions to poverty and inequality in a Mali that is at peace and united. In this context, the implementation of economic development projects as well as the availability of trainings to help young people find gainful employment remain important mechanisms for youth stability. In fact, PROJES helps young adults increase their employability to better meet their economic needs, all while reducing unemployment in the central regions of Mali.
PROJES aims to promote stabilisation and socio-economic revival in central Mali, strengthening essential services and access to them for the population while supporting social cohesion and communities. It also aims to help vulnerable populations generate income and employment.
Vulnerable, unemployed or underemployed youth aged 16 to 40 constitute the target group for Swisscontact Mali. The activities supported by PROJES will also generate both direct and indirect employment for neighbouring populations not supported by the project. An innovative process has been set in motion that relies on new professionals (e.g. guidance counsellors, entrepreneurship coaches, and employment advisors). These professionals intervene through specific and equally innovative mechanisms: a “Job Orientation and Insertion Tool” (Dispositif d’Orientation et d’Insertion Professionnelle, DOIP) and Employment Facilitation Offices (Bureaux d’Appui à l’Insertion, BAI). Through these two mechanisms Swisscontact shall provide information, training, and cross-cutting trainings (e.g. trainings in organisation, accounting, entrepreneurship skills, creation and development, management of micro- and small enterprises) as well as financial and logistical support to target groups.
