The big majority of waste in El Salvador and Honduras is not collected and properly managed. Less than 10% of waste is being recycled. People burn their waste or throw it away. Like this, waters and landscapes get polluted, posing a health risk for the population and the animals such as crazing cattle. The few waste that gets collected, often lands on open dump sites where it also has the potential to contaminate air and ground water. In light of these challenges, the project aims to support these countries in boosting recycling efforts.
“Circular Impact” supports small and medium-sized enterprises in the recycling sector to grow and boost their recycling efforts. Our economic-centred approach focuses on three key areas:
1. Facilitating a robust legal framework for waste management in Honduras
2. Promoting circular economy and recycling through public awareness campaigns and academic trainings in Honduras and El Salvador
2. Developing and empowering businesses that are part of the recycling value chain in Honduras.
By strengthening the legal system and the recycling business environment- and promoting awareness campaigns, we will improve the waste collection in our focus municipalities San Pedro Sula, Honduras and San Salvador, El Salvador. From the beginning, the project works with public authorities, business support organisation, and green businesses and shares with them the responsibility for the project activities. This ensures that after project end, waste collection, recycling and sensitization of the public and businesses continue.
By combining a legal framework with awareness raising activities and developing economic incentives for green business growth, we contribute to the creation of an effective recycling system in Honduras and El Salvador. By highlighting the value of waste and fostering recycling markets, we strive to mitigate climate change and drive social transformation towards a sustainable circular economy.
