Contribution to sustainability
The project promotes the sustainable cultivation of fine cocoa by small farmers in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru who work in agroforestry systems. By supporting organic and fair trade cocoa, it contributes to environmental and economic sustainability and strengthens producer organisations within the cocoa and chocolate value chain.
Traceability and compliance with European regulations
The initiative improves the traceability of the cocoa sector to meet the requirements of the European Union to avoid deforestation. This includes training, investment in control systems and awareness raising for new trade and environmental regulations, particularly with regard to ‘legal’ cocoa.
Strengthening producer organisations and marketing
The project supports the consolidation and political influence of producer organisations to improve their market position. It promotes the marketing of organic and Fairtrade cocoa by analysing the organisations, providing training in business management and negotiating trade agreements with buyers in Europe.
International trade promotion and competitions
The international marketing of fine flavour cocoa is promoted through financing and support for participation in trade fairs in Europe. In addition, competitions such as ‘Cacao de Oro’ are organised at national and regional level to improve the quality of cocoa and attract international buyers.
Social and economic empowerment of smallholder farmers
The project improves the living conditions of cocoa-farming families by enabling them to earn higher incomes through fair trade. It promotes the participation of women and young people in the cocoa value chain, thus contributing to the economic development of rural regions in Andean countries.
